ICB corrosion inhibitor – intelligent protection for metal

With ICB (Intelligent Corrosion Blocker), EXCOR has made a significant breakthrough in corrosion protection using vapour-phase corrosion inhibitors. ICB releases the active ingredient onto the metal in a controlled manner, depending on the level of humidity in the environment. This results in a longer-lasting protective effect and improves the protection of your metal products.

"With ICB, we know that we are offering our customers a first-class solution that guarantees optimum corrosion protection for their products. The user-friendliness of ICB and the superior performance compared to VCI have convinced us in the long term."

Martin Wildner, Head of Logistics – MHS GmbH | Lager Waldmünchen, Burglengenfeld

MHS Logistics ICB success story

"We have tested the new EXCOR ICB corrosion protection in several climatic stress tests and ICB performs better in our studies than VCI. In this way, we maximize the corrosion protection of our products.“

Daniel Reinsdorf - Technical project planning at Wilhelm Becker GmbH & co. KG

"We chose ICB because it allows us to offer our customers longer-lasting corrosion protection - especially during longer intermediate storage in non-air-conditioned halls or open-air spaces. This is a major issue with today's bottlenecks in storage and production areas."

Hans-Jürgen Glettner, Operations Manager of Netzsch-Feinmahltechnik GmbH in Selb

What is a corrosion inhibitor?

A corrosion inhibitor protects metal products from corrosion by releasing corrosion-inhibiting active ingredients into the packaging space in a controlled manner.

Unlike conventional VCI solutions, the Intelligent Corrosion Blocker (ICB) actively responds to ambient humidity levels. The corrosion protection is only released when there is actually an increased risk of corrosion.

This reduces the loss of active ingredients, extends the duration of protection and improves the efficiency of the temporary corrosion protection.

How does the ICB intelligent corrosion inhibitor work?

As humidity rises, the risk of corrosion in metals increases steadily. The Intelligent Corrosion Blocker actively adapts to humidity levels and, through its controlled release of active ingredients, provides protection precisely when the risk arises. If the level of moisture promoting corrosion rises inside the packaging, the release of the active ingredient also increases. If the moisture level falls again, the release of the active ingredient is reduced accordingly. This prolongs the sustained-release effect of the corrosion protection in the ICB films.

A comparison of how VCI and ICB work

Vapour-phase corrosion protection with VCI

The release of the VCI active ingredient remains constant, regardless of the actual corrosion protection required, which leads to inefficient use of the active ingredient.

Vapour-phase corrosion protection with ICB

The release of the ICB active agent continuously adapts to the corrosion risk. This reduces active agent loss and maximises the duration of effectiveness.

Advantages of ICB over VCI

  • ✓ High performance

No loss of active ingredient during the hot manufacturing process, as is common with VCI films. The active ingredient content of the films is higher from the outset. This enhances corrosion protection.

  • ✓ More efficient than VCI

The demand-driven release of active ingredients reduces losses and maximises the duration of protection. This ensures a longer period of effectiveness and storage life than with VCI, thereby reducing the risk of damage and customer complaints.

  • ✓ Packaging of warm parts

leads to condensation forming on the inside of the film. ICB allows warm parts to be packaged, as the condensation is inhibited by the corrosion-inhibiting agents. This saves time and costs.

  • ✓ User-friendly

Compared to VCI, ICB loses fewer active ingredients during the packaging process, which leads to a greater sense of security.

  • ✓ Tested and evaluated

ICB Type Q was awarded the top mark by the ILF Magdeburg materials testing institute and has been approved by leading car manufacturers.
