Smart packaging describes the further development of packaging through additional functions. A distinction is made between active packaging, which acts on the packaged contents (e.g. protection against corrosion, germs or moisture), and intelligent packaging, which collects, stores or transmits data.
RFID chips, colour indicators and digital sensors make packaging ‘smart’ – they create transparency, enable automated processes in warehousing and logistics, and thus contribute to increased efficiency and quality assurance along the supply chain.

RFID technology: function & advantages
RFID (radio frequency identification) enables contactless data exchange, for example for automated stock monitoring. The information is exchanged via an electromagnetic field between RFID transponder and reader.
With our RFID system for checking the shelf life of EMIBO capsules, you can monitor the active service life of the dispensers visually and digitally. This prevents dispensers from being discarded too early or too late – for targeted inventory management and more transparency in the supply chain.
VCI dispenser capsules with RFID – smart packaging
Intelligent packaging solutions enable greater transparency, process reliability and sustainability. Our RFID-supported EMIBO dispensers combine proven corrosion protection with intelligent data transmission.
Thanks to integrated RFID technology, EMIBO becomes active AND intelligent packaging. The VCI dispensers protect sensitive metal surfaces from corrosion inside the packaging. RFID helps to monitor the shelf life of the capsules and enables automated return to the reusable system. This significantly extends the usefulness of packaging solutions – which is both economical and ecological.

Smart packaging is divided into active and intelligent packaging.
Active packaging interacts with the packed product by either releasing substances into the contents (e.g. VCI dispensers) or extracting them (e.g. desiccants).
Intelligent packaging does not affect the contents, but fulfils an additional communicative function, such as displaying information on quantity and transport monitoring (e.g. with RFID chips) or measuring active ingredient saturation (e.g. in desiccants using colour indicators).
RFID (radio frequency identification) is the contactless data exchange via radio waves between an RFID transponder and an RFID reader/writer. This allows, for example, stock levels or shelf lives to be recorded automatically – without any visual or manual input.
EMIBO with RFID is available as part of a flexible usage model. You can use the RFID scanner either mobile or stationary. We tailor the testing technology to your individual requirements and are happy to advise you.
